DonBelle’s Most Mature Film Yet, 'Tayo Sa Wakas' is a Journey Worth Following Once | Movie Review

It follows Cisco and Cheska, a long-term couple who embark on a final “break-up trip” to decide whether to let go or fight for their relationship after years of growing apart due to conflicting ambitions.

A few minutes into the film, there’s already a sense of familiarity in much of its structure, to the point that the twist and ending become easy giveaways. An almost manic pixie dream girl–like character leading a guy’s emotional growth? Groundbreaking, as Miranda Priestly would say.

Fortunately, there’s a lot to like about what comes after. The work rivalry between the two lead characters really adds something valuable to the film. It fits well within the story they were going for and provides just enough additional layering to make the conflict feel a bit fresher. Donny Pangilinan does a convincing job portraying his character, while Belle Mariano undoubtedly delivers as the heart and soul of the movie.

And then, the ending happens. It turns out the film eventually falls back into the familiar way Filipino films close their films. Meanwhile, the Star Cinema-y of it can be found in the little lines in the script or the montages of the characters. It can be found in the little lines in the script or the montages of the characters. Suddenly, the earlier criticisms about the film come rushing back. Then again, the characterizations remain prevalent in the real world. I’ll give them that.

Wigs aside, Tayo Sa Wakas may be remembered as the film that gave DonBelle a decent space to take on more mature roles. As movies often do, it can serve as a guide for couples — the very audience that will likely fill cinemas for this. Imagine if it could’ve done more to be remembered for so much more... I would’ve watched and watched their journey ’til the end. For now, once is enough. 3/5 ⭐
