When it comes to major local releases, never doubt Star Cinema, which launched Tayo Sa Wakas to solid numbers this time.
The Cathy Garcia-Sampana-directed romantic drama opened to ₱12 million last Wednesday, May 27. This is the biggest opening-day gross for a local film this year, surpassing the likes of The Loved One and Almost Us. This is also more than double of what An Inconvenient Love did back in 2022.
It should be noted that its opening day fell on a holiday, which likely helped bring in both fans and casual moviegoers alike. Star Cinema also implemented the same pricing-model strategy used for recent local releases as part of its 33rd anniversary celebration.
As we’ve previously mentioned, ABS-CBN and Star Cinema’s marketing machine—arguably comparable to Disney’s—will undoubtedly back the project. Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano barnstormed malls around the country and visited high-profile YouTube channels hosted by personalities such as Vice Ganda and Karmina Constantino. Even the premiere night was star-studded across different entertainment sectors, with half of BINI attending the event.
A week before the premiere, they also released a new trailer that further highlighted the film’s central conflict. Then, a day before the premiere, presales were pacing at more than half of Un/Happy For You (₱20.5 million) presales at the same time frame, signaling an opening north of ₱10 million. And it did.
One interesting angle that was heavily promoted was that this is supposedly the love team’s final film for now. The studio, together with the love team’s fans, ensured that this narrative reached a wide audience, and it may have helped boost interest as well. With a competitive June on the horizon, the film is looking to maximize its numbers during its first two weeks. For now, it’s off to a great start.
Meanwhile, Colony is reported to be the number one film in the country. According to Pioneer, the film has also set the biggest opening day record for any movie this year in the Philippines, surpassing The Devil Wears Prada 2.
Separately, Ayala-exclusive Obsession is selling out screens. This means exhibitors collectively saw revenue with a floor of more than ₱20 million yesterday.
