Naysayers may have said it could no longer happen, but the Philippines delivered for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The latest Tom Holland-led superhero flick opened to a gargantuan $9.3 million (Columbia is now reporting ₱586.9 million) in the country. That's the third-highest-grossing opening ever here, behind only Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War (both of which also starred Holland as Spider-Man).
The opening was also so huge that it became the country's biggest opening of the year so far, surpassing Toy Story 5. Among post-pandemic releases, it also overtook Inside Out 2 ($6.5 million) for the biggest opening ever. It's a major win for the industry, which may have been concerned that Filipinos had grown tired of the superhero genre. For now, at least, that doesn't seem to be the case with Spider-Man.
As we've previously reported, Brand New Day benefited from the goodwill generated by its well-received predecessor, Spider-Man: No Way Home, as well as anticipation from moviegoers who were unable to see that film on the big screen during its 2021–2022 run.

As for last week's numbers (July 22–26), Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has already collected $3.4 million in just two weeks, enough to surpass the lifetime total of Oppenheimer in the country. Meanwhile, the buzzy hit Obsession has now earned more than $2.1 million (est. ₱129 million) locally, putting it ahead of films such as Michael and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. It's another testament to Filipinos' fondness for the horror genre. Next stop: Insidious: Out of the Further.
Meanwhile, under the Disney umbrella, Moana has now grossed more than $2.667 million, while Toy Story 5 continues to draw families to theaters, earning $5.376 million in six weeks.
With the box office looking so hot right now, the local industry hopes the momentum carries over to the highly anticipated 2026 edition of the Cinemalaya Film Festival. With screenings for several films already sold out, that hope may well come to fruition.
