'Demon Slayer' No Match for the Warrens as 'The Conjuring: Last Rites' breaks PH 2025 records

It seems the Warrens are the preferred demon slayers of Filipinos.

The Conjuring: Last Rites has broken Philippine box office records for 2025 with an estimated $4.5 million (₱250 million+) opening.

The film now holds the highest-grossing opening week record for any movie this year in the country, surpassing Demon Slayer ($4.2 million), which had just taken the title from Final Destination: Bloodlines ($3.5 million) two weeks prior. It’s also, by far, the biggest opening ever for a Conjuring universe film in the Philippines.

Several factors worked in Last Rites’ favor. It's been almost a decade since the last mainline Conjuring movie hit theaters (The Devil Made Me Do It was only released via HBO GO in 2021), likely building nostalgia among fans. The previous entry in the franchise, The Nun II, was also better received than more recent installments.

On the marketing front, everything started with a strong title: Last Rites. Promos emphasized the chemistry between Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, while raising the stakes with the promise of their final case which may have boosted audience interest even more. It certainly helps that the Conjuring universe is a well-established horror brand, and horror remains a popular genre in the Philippines and its neighboring Southeast Asian markets.

Midnight screenings once again proved to be a boon for horror films. Warner Bros. reported that Last Rites set the record for the highest-grossing midnight screening ever in the country. The momentum continued, with Saturday box office numbers becoming the biggest of the year so far. While audience reception will be key to its staying power, the film’s massive debut suggests it could remain in theaters until the end of the month.

Still, Demon Slayer might have the last laugh, as it remains the highest-grossing release of the year overall.

The article will be updated as soon as more numbers get released.
