‘Superman’ Takes Off Modestly in the Philippines amid DC Universe Relaunch

The relaunch of the DC Universe is off to a decent start. James Gunn's Superman, starring David Corenswet in the titular role, opens to $2.4 million (est. ₱136 million) in the Philippines during the week of July 9-13, 2025.

As previously reported, the popular IP faces many hurdles as it tries to reintroduce their world to the Filipino audiences. Given that, the opening can be considered acceptable, provided that strong word-of-mouth drives a solid second-week box office performance. After all, one key goal of this film is to reignite Filipino excitement for future DC offerings (Supergirl opens next year).

In terms of comparisons, the film opened ahead of recent superhero films: Marvel's Captain America: Brave New World ($1.66-$1.77 million) and Thunderbolts* ($1.5 million). It also recorded the biggest opening for a DC film in the country since Aquaman ($4.4 million) back in 2018. However, it opened below Man of Steel (₱247 million) which marked the launch of the previous DC Universe. It’s worth noting that Man of Steel experienced steep week-to-week drops, something Superman hopes to avoid. Next week will be crucial, as Marvel's The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Antoinette Jadaone's Sunshine are set to open on July 23.

Jurassic World: Rebirth continues to chug along, albeit likely trending behind Dominion. The Dino movie added $714K (est. ₱40.8 million), down a standard 56 percent from its opening week. In just over two weeks, the film has grossed $2.58 million (est. ₱147 million).

Fellow Universal feature How To Train Your Dragon was off a huge 79 percent, grossing $34K (₱1.9 million). The live action adaptation has now grossed $3.53 million (₱201 million) in five weeks.

With Superman dominating most screens, Elio fell 82 percent this week, earning just $3.7K. The original Pixar film has now collected $352K in the country. However, it was M3GAN 2.0 who was hit the most this weekend. The sequel only grossed $1K, down 96 percent from its second week. In three weeks, it has now made $180K.
