Familiarity breeds... box office. It's Universal Pictures' time to make millions at the local box office, as the live action adaptation of How To Train Your Dragon soared high in the country (June 11-15, 2025). Meanwhile, Star Cinema also started rolling out Only We Know globally this week.

Toothless and company opened to $1.6 million (est. ₱91 million), easily making it the #1 movie in the country. Adjusted for exchange rates back in 2019, that figure is nearly identical to the opening of the last Dragon movie, The Hidden World ($1.75 million/₱91.5 million). The strong debut highlights the enduring popularity of the franchise in the Philippines.
This should come as a welcome sign for international distributors of films not named Minecraft, Final Destination, or under the Disney banner, as local audiences are once again filling up theater seats for a variety of releases. Universal is also looking to maintain its momentum as they open M3GAN 2.0 and Jurassic World: Rebirth in the next few weeks.
Box Office Mojo has also released an official figure for Ballerina: $616,704 (est. ₱35 million). However, it’s unclear whether this represents just its opening week or a two-week total.
Facing direct competition, Lilo & Stitch took a tumble this week. The fellow live-action adaptation grossed $262K which is down 61.7 percent from last week. No worries for the little creature, though, as the film has already collected $4.2 million (₱240 million) over four weeks.
Nearing the end of its run, Thunderbolts* added $638 (₱36K) this week for a 13-week total of $3,163,457. That's the number to beat (or at least match) for The Fantastic Four: First Steps which opens this July.
After releasing back-to-back box office safe hits, Star Cinema offers a different flavor this time with Only We Know, starring Dingdong Dantes and Charo Santos-Concio. Unfortunately. there are no official figures yet domestically. Overseas, the film opened to $3,016 (₱172K) in Australia, and $1,207 in New Zealand (₱69K). Kudos to the studio for producing such a film and releasing it theatrically, which will likely extend its appeal once it hits streaming.
