'Final Destination: Bloodlines' Sets 2025 Records in PH; 'Thunderbolts' Tumbles

The good times at the  Philippines box office continue. The much-anticipated return of the Final Destination franchise proved to be a strong booster, as Bloodlines set a new record for the highest opening week gross in the country this year.

The sixth installment in the franchise opened to a massive $3.5 million (est. ₱189 million) during the week of May 14-18, 2025. This debut easily outperformed titles such as Captain America: Brave New World, A Minecraft Movie, and Thunderbolts* in the country. Among horror films, the opening is just below Insidious: The Red Door, which earned ₱205.6 million in 2023.

Horror has always been a strong genre in the country, regardless of its origin. While Final Destination is not exactly huge in back in the 2000s, the nostalgia among those who grew up with the franchise (now a highly coveted demographic) are very strong. Interest was already evident right from its first trailer which garnered 25 million views in all social media platforms in the Philippines. This bodes well for upcoming Warner Bros. horror films such as Weapons and The Conjuring: Last Rites

To further fuel anticipation, Warner Bros. highlighted iconic moments from the franchise, including the viral log truck stunt. One TikTok video recreating the log truck scene on Commonwealth Avenue received 20 million views and was featured by several popular film-related accounts on X (formerly Twitter).

The studio also held sneak previews a few days ahead of the official release, which proved to be a resounding success, with most screenings in major malls selling out. With Lilo & Stitch targeting a different demographic, Bloodlines is poised for a strong run through June.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning also opened in the tracking week (May 17). However, Paramount has opted not to release local box office figures until the film opens in the United States. Its IMAX-exclusive run is expected to significantly boost its performance in the Philippines.

Marvel's  Thunderbolts* took a tumble this week after scoring a healthy second-week hold. The new ensemble grossed $306,445 (est. ₱16 million), down 61 percent from last week. In three weeks, it has now collected $3,028,460 (est. ₱167 million) in the country. If it maintains decent drops in the coming weeks, it could easily surpass the lifetime total of Captain America: Brave New World ($3,239,714). With stronger word-of-mouth, this is a promising position for Marvel ahead of The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July.

Meanwhile, the Ayala Malls Cinemas-exclusive Black Bag added $876 this week, bringing its two-week total to $28,001 (₱1.5 million).
