How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies. (C) GDH |
How To Make Millions is a realistic, poignant look at a family of three generations living in this current era. It works so much because it feels so real and (surprisingly) modern. The details and layers really elevate the material. Even when it’s not saying anything, its commentaries and themes blossom. It's also a welcome surprise how their culture is similar to some in the Philippines. We see electric fans, high interest in religion, & some similar social problems.
The big one is obviously the importance of family for better or worse. After all, Thailand and Philippines both reside in Southeast Asia. The film is not afraid to dissect family structure & values and the consequences it brings. Writer and director Pat Boonnitipat sets up everything solidly which made the dynamics of the family feel authentic and relatable. In times where population is aging and medicine continues to improve, we are going to see this story play out in real life.
At the heart of this movie are the strong performances from Usha "Taew" Seamkhum and Putthipong "Billkin" Assaratanakul. To see their dynamic on screen is just magnificent. The film gets a bit draggy toward the end and it really invites you to cry but when you do cry, it’s a genuine one. 4/5 ⭐️
How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies arrives in Netflix Philippines and Southeast Asia on September 12th.
