As summer winds down and industry waits for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the box office also settles for a calm weekend (August 23-25, 2024) - with newcomers failing to steal the top spot from holdovers.
The top opening this week belonged to Amazon MGM's Blink Twice starring Channing Tatum which opened to a meh $7.3 million. While not exactly bad for this $20 million production, it's not exactly great either. Positioned to see a boost from next weekend's holiday, the film hopes its fine critics score and B- Cinemascore is enough to entice more audiences.

It was Deadpool & Wolverine, however, who took the reigns once again with a strong -39% drop for a weekend gross of $18.3 million. With enough momentum, it should reach $600 million by the end of next weekend.
Alien Romulus took a 61% drop from last weekend with $16.2 million for a two-week total of $72 million. The bigger story for the film though is its surprise strong showing in China wherein the film has now passed its domestic total with $73.3 million.
It Ends With Us is also enjoying its fantastic run at the box office, adding $11.85 million this weekend. Its three-week total of $120 million already make this Blake Lively's highest grossing domestic film.
Faith-based movie The Forge opened to a decent $6 million which is powered by a strong A+ Cinemascore - a typical reception for the genre. Black audiences went in droves for this film with 40% of the pie.
Lionsgate continues to take an L at the box office - this time with The Crow. The reboot acquired by the studio for $10 million opened to a paltry $4.6 million during the entire weekend.
It's clearly not a one-time weekend for the re-release of Coraline as it enjoys a -49% drop this weekend with $5 million for a total of $24 million. It has now surpassed Laika's previous release Missing Link which only brought $16 million domestically back in 2019.
Usuals suspects of having strong drops all throughout August remained present here: Twisters (-38%, $6.2 million), Despicable Me 4 (-30%, $4.4 million), & Inside Out 2 (-39%, $2.1 million). Overall box office is down, however, from last year when Gran Turismo led the weekend.
