‘Minions & Monsters’ takes on Hollywood the 'Minions' way, and it kind of rocks | Movie Review

Follows the Minions in 1920s Hollywood as they search for frightening creatures for their monster movie, partner with a green creature, and must save the planet after unleashing monsters.

In true Minions fashion, the film embraces the randomness people have come to expect. The Minions are placed in various locations and simply do their thing. They laugh. We laugh. Surprisingly, Minions & Monsters has more to offer than that. With fewer gags, the film actually gives its characters enough depth to make them worth following beyond the comedy.

It also helps that the film fully embraces its Hollywood setting. Hollywood and cinema are a gold mine for references and creative backdrops, and the film makes the most of them. On top of that, it builds a central story around filmmaking itself. I have to admit, it’s both hilarious and heartwarming that one of the Minions is essentially this world’s version of Spielberg. It’s all great fun, although the story does drift into more generic territory by the end.

Minions & Monsters is a solid entry in the Despicable Me franchise—one that remains consistently funny while paying tribute to the magic of cinema along the way. 3.5/5 ⭐️
