'Prada 2' sets new PH opening-day record for 2026; 'She Who Must Not Be Named' calls for attention

As expected, the return of Miranda Priestly and company proved to be a strong jolt in bringing Filipinos back to the big screen, as The Devil Wears Prada 2 set a new opening-day record in the Philippines for 2026.

The highly anticipated sequel reportedly opened to ₱17.2 million in the country last Wednesday, April 29, according to PEP Troika. This opening-day figure was a few million higher than that of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (₱12.47 million). Even more impressive: Mario’s opening day fell on a Saturday—typically the most attended day at the cinema—while Prada opened on a regular Wednesday.

The strong opening comes as no surprise. As previously reported, presales were already ahead of all Marvel 2025 films and were at around one-third of where Wicked: For Good stood a week before its release. Two days before release, it was already narrowing the gap with Wicked. This puts Prada 2 on track for a strong week ahead. Following For Good’s trajectory, an opening above ₱75 million is on the cards. However, with Friday (May 1) being a national holiday in the country, a stronger weekend jump is possible, and an opening above the ₱100 million mark is not out of reach.

Counterprogramming the film is FranSeth’s She Who Must Not Be Named. From the same PEP Troika report, the romantic comedy reportedly opened to under ₱500K in the country. As mentioned last week, counterprogramming against Prada 2 may be challenging due to demographic overlap and similar competition in the following weeks. Still, it could perform better once it hits SVOD, as a theatrical release improves public visibility.

Due to the late release of figures, data from April 22–26 can only be reported now. Michael opened to $435,556 (est. ₱26.7 million) in the country. While that is below the opening of Bohemian Rhapsody ($896K) back in 2018, it’s worth noting that the marketplace was very different then. Additionally, Queen’s songs may have aged more strongly among Filipinos over the past decade. Replicating the leggy run of Rhapsody could prove difficult, however, with Prada 2 and other upcoming major releases taking up screens from Michael (Mortal Kombat II will take IMAX screens beginning May 6).

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie added $163,595 in its fourth week of release in the country, down 41 percent from the previous week. With $1,654,377 (est. ₱101 million) in the bank, the sequel is currently the highest-grossing animated film in the country for the year.

Disney-distributed films Ready or Not 2 and Hoppers collected $6K and $1K, respectively, during the same week. Updated totals now place Here I Come at $916K and Hoppers at $1.379 million. Meanwhile, The Drama collected $2K during the week, bringing its four-week total to $119,490 (est. ₱7 million).

Fifth Solomon’s 3 Words, starring Ronnie Alonte and Loisa Andalio, reportedly opened to ₱100K last Wednesday, April 22.
