'Zootopia' improves on predecessor; 'Wicked' stumbles but still leads PH box office

Madam Morrible may have reversed the fortunes this year as Wicked continued to dominate the box office (November 26-30) despite the opening of Zootopia 2, contrary to what happened last year when Moana 2 dominated.

Yes, For Good is still number one, adding over $1,065,760 (est. ₱63 million) this week for a two-week total of $4,173,642. However, the drop is harsher this time around with 62 percent, suggesting more fans saw the film on its opening week. It's also already lower than the second week gross of its predecessor which made $1,292,836 - a fantastic 28 percent drop.

With heavier competition this time around in December in the name of Five Nights at Freddy's 2 and Avatar: Fire & Ash, it will be a question if it can mimic the longevity of Wicked which ended its run at $5.8 million.

Zootopia 2 opened this week in the country with an solid $721,587 (est. ₱42 million). Make no mistake, this opening is already close to the final total of its predecessor here ($1 million). However, this slot has seen massive successes for Disney like Moana 2 ($4.9 million opening).

Why didn't it open as big? As said, the first film was not exactly a big hit in the country. It didn't help either that this isn't an animated musical unlike Frozen or Moana. Thanks to strong audience scores globally, the film should enjoy nice legs until the arrival of the 2025 Metro Manila Film Festival.

Now You See Me, Now You Don't added $88,468 (₱5 million) this week for a three-week total of $821,905 (₱48.5 million). While it's unlikely to match its previous sequel's total here ($2,169,309), it remains a tidy sum for distributor Viewers Choice Philippines. It's also another testament to the dwindling market for non fan-driven or non-horror franchises here in the country as they continue to struggle to convince general audiences to see their films.
