Box Office: 'Fantastic Four' falls slightly while 'Sunshine' surges in second week

The Fantastic Four-Sunshine duo continue to dominate Philippines box office (July 30-August 3, 2025), with each having notable stories worth talking about.

Sunshine and The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Over at Marvel, The Fantastic Four: First Steps collected $996K (est. ₱57 million) during its second week in the country. The more interesting development, however, was the film’s drop: just 51 percent. That’s a significantly stronger hold compared to its domestic performance, where it fell by 66 percent. It also lands between the second-week drops of Thunderbolts (48 percent) and Captain America: Brave New World (65 percent).

The drop may have been affected by last week's inclement weather, which likely disrupted plans for thousands of fans. Still, it’s worth noting that Deadpool & Wolverine faced a similar challenge last year but saw a much smaller decline of just 40 percent despite a much bigger opening ($3.1 million). After two weeks, Marvel’s First Family has already earned $3.33 million (est. ₱190 million) locally, making it the highest-grossing Marvel film in the Philippines so far this year in U.S. rates.

Meanwhile, Antoinette Jadaone’s Sunshine is shaping up to be a word-of-mouth success. The Maris Racal-led drama saw notable box office growth in its second week. According to Lunchbox founder Carl Chavez, the film had its best-performing day on Saturday, August 2. That record was immediately broken the following day, as Sunday, August 3 surpassed both Saturday's numbers and the film’s full opening weekend total.

Throughout the week, more public figures expressed support for the film. Further boosting its momentum were the continued block and special screenings (with talkbacks) hosted by various organizations. Online chatter also started reaching more casual audiences, with memes of Maris Racal in costume from Sunshine gaining traction.

Despite the upcoming releases of Weapons, Freakier Friday, and Materialists, the strong second-week turnout allowed Sunshine to retain screenings across 65 locations for its third week. A key story to watch in September will be the Film Academy's decision on this year’s submission for the Best International Feature Film at the Oscars, as Sunshine is seen as a potential contender.

Top grossing films of the year:

  • Final Destination: Bloodlines ($7.4M+)
  • Superman ($4.6M+)
  • Lilo & Stitch ($4.3M+)
