For a spy thriller, ‘The Amateur’ makes a convincing impression | Movie Review

Charlie Heller is a brilliant CIA decoder whose world comes crashing down when his wife dies in a London terrorist attack. When his supervisors refuse to take action, his intelligence becomes the ultimate weapon as he embarks on a dangerous trek across the globe to track down those responsible.

The film rushes through the setup, knowing that the real payoff lies in the revenge part. When we finally reach that moment, it’s fortunately convincing. The action choices work well, given the film’s more limited scope. At the same time, it’s surprisingly more globe-trotting than I expected. It reminds me of the mid-budget spy thrillers we rarely see nowadays.

The subplots are fine, though they can be a little distracting in terms of pacing as the film tries to juggle them all. Rami Malek is solid in the role he’s given, while Laurence Fishburne delivers a fun performance despite his limited screen time.

For a spy thriller, the film makes an interesting choice with its ending. While it’s not what one would usually expect and feels a bit anti-climactic, I respect the decision since it ties back to the character’s motivations. Mission accomplished for The Amateur. 3/5 ⭐️

The Amateur is now playing in PH cinemas.
