'Nosferatu' opens on par with 'The Monkey' as 'Captain America' leads for the third consecutive week

On the week of openings and re-releases of Oscar 2025 nominees, it was Nosferatu who made the biggest impression among Filipino audiences (February 26-March 2, 2025).

The Robert Eggers gothic horror opened to ₱5.9 million ($103,362). The opening is on par with last week's new horror The Monkey which likely suggests these kinds of horror has a solid, if not massive, audience that will surely come on opening week.

However, it was actually Captain America who is still on top of Philippines' chart. Brave New World added ₱18 million ($321,872) on its third week for a total of ₱163 million ($2,853,868). It's now on track to end its run above Disney's recent release Mufasa: The Lion King ($3 million). In direct comparisons, it may still end up as the lowest grossing Marvel movie in the post-pandemic era.

Facing direct competition, The Monkey fell 65 percent this week with ₱1.9 million ($33,515). In two weeks, the horror has now collected ₱8.5 million ($148,735) in the country. At this rate, surpassing Longlegs ($228K) may be a tougher job to do now.

A Complete Unknown, another Oscar 2025 contender, also opened this week with ₱1.2 million ($21,574). The Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothée Chalamet saw a higher opening that recent Oscar fares such as Anora and A Real Pain. It did help that A Complete Unknown is not exclusive to one cinema exhibitor unlike the two mentioned earlier.

Speaking of Anora, the film added ₱28K ($503) during its re-release this week. The Oscar 2025 Best Picture winner has now grossed ₱1.7 million ($30,453) in the country. The Wild Robot ($615), Wicked ($395), and A Real Pain ($272) also added a few thousands this week thanks to the re-releases.

Other films:
  • Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy: $1,848 (-86.9%)
  • Mufasa: The Lion King$1,186 (-79.4%)
