'Captain America' posts biggest drop for a Marvel pic post-pandemic; 'Hello, Love, Again' passes ₱1.6 billion

This week, the titular hero was caught without its wings. Meanwhile, the country's top-grossing local film has soared further.

The fourth-quel added ₱33.5 million ($577K) from February 19-23, 2025, which is down 65% from last week. This is the biggest drop for a Marvel movie since 2022, even lower than Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (56%). While it should be noted that Brave New World likely enjoyed a boost from Valentine's Day last week, which resulted to a harsher second week drop, the opening number was softer-than-expected to begin with.

Whether this a fluke remains to be seen. Deadpool and Wolverine was a massive hit last year, but that film featured bigger characters and easter eggs fans have come to expect in recent MCU fares. Marvel will try to court its fans again next month with Thunderbolts* and in July with Fantastic Four: The First Steps

Meanwhile, The Monkey provided some decent counterprogramming the same week. The Osgood Perkins-directed horror opened to ₱5.6 million ($97,320) in the country. Given its audience reviews and tough competition, it remains to be seen if it can match Longlegs ($228K) from the same director.

Near the end of its run, Mufasa: The Lion King has now grossed ₱179 million ($3,087,183) in the country. Disney will attempt to bring the family audiences back this March with Snow White starring Rachel Zegler.

Over at local films, Star Cinema has officially announced that Cathy Garcia-Sampana's Hello, Love, Again has grossed ₱1.6 billion globally. It's another proof that Kathryn Bernardo and Alden Richards, in a genre the general public is known them for, will deliver at the box office. Whatever the industry learns from this hopefully doesn't hinder the genre diversification happening in our movie outputs.
