'Sonic' tops Philippines Box Office; 'And The Breadwinner Is...' makes some overseas sales

After nearly a month of release delays in the country, Sonic and friends finally arrived and fans quickly went in line at the box office. Paramount's Sonic The Hedgehog 3 topped Philippines box office during the week of January 15-19, 2025 (Updated 1/27 with Wolf Man's numbers).

The threequel opened to ₱27.8 million ($475K) which Deadline reports as the best opening for the series in the country. It's worth noting that the release of its previous installments were affected by the pandemic. Nevertheless, this is a solid opening for the film in a market where holdovers make up the top spots in the chart.

Speaking of holdovers, Mufasa: The Lion King continues to add more revenue to its bank. The prequel added ₱13 million ($223,333) this week, a 42 percent decrease from last week. It has now banked 164 million ($2,817,041) in the country, according to The Numbers

Another opener this week Wolf Man grossed ₱5 million ($86,388) in 28 locations. Meanwhile, Wicked added ₱1.6 million ($28,622)  this week for a 9-week total of ₱330 million ($5,665,235).

Moana 2 has also officially passed the half a billion mark in the country in current Philippine rates. The sequel collected 800K ($13,900) this week for a total of ₱500 million ($8,589,992).

The 10th anniversary re-release of Christopher Nolan's sci-fi epic Interstellar also began this week. While we're still waiting for an official report from Warner Bros., our tracking suggests that the re-release performed well on IMAX, potentially grossing up to the single-digit millions.

And The Breadwinner Is... (C) Star Cinema

In international markets, And The Breadwinner Is... started its run with some decent openings. In Australia, the Vice Ganda dramedy opened to ₱2 million ($35,821) estimated 31 screens. Meanwhile, New Zealand contributed ₱825K ($14,141) since it opened in the market last week. While they are admittedly lower than Hello, Love, Again, there many factors in favor of that sequel compared to an original such as Breadwinner. Despite that, this remains a win for Star Cinema which produced the two films.

Late Report: Uninvited also opened in United Arab Emirates during the start of the year. The Dan Villegas-directed thriller grossed ₱301K ($5,171) in 12 locations from January 2-5.

Box Office Mojo also reports MMFF 50 Best Picture winner Green Bones has grossed ₱128 million ($2,196,820). Columbia Pictures distributed the movie in the Philippines.
