In Obliterating the 'Joker' Fantasy, 'Folie à Deux' Takes a Dull Turn | Movie Review

Struggling with his dual identity, failed comedian Arthur Fleck meets the love of his life, Harley Quinn, while incarcerated at Arkham State Hospital.

I believe the first 'Joker' movie did not justify Arthur Fleck's actions, even though it walked a thin line by tackling real-life issues and mental health problems (which were presented in a mixed manner at best).

As for the sequel, there’s a clear sense that the filmmakers wanted to clarify their intentions from the predecessor. On paper, there’s intrigue in how they would approach it: a trial, the inclusion of music, and Lady Gaga. Unfortunately, they failed to do justice to any of these elements.

With the trial as the main plot, it didn’t really accomplish anything. It felt merely present without advancing Arthur’s character. Even the talented Harry Lawtey seemed to be just there. The focus was on clearing things up, but while the critique of sensationalism remains relevant, it didn’t make a significant impact.

The musical angle also had great potential, but aside from a few exceptions, the jukebox musical scenes felt lifeless. It seems director Todd Phillips wasn’t entirely familiar with how to execute this in a film. Adjusting it to the world he built is not a valid excuse either.

Most shockingly, Lady Gaga was underutilized in the film. For a movie titled 'Folie à Deux,' which suggests shared delusion, Gaga's character, Lee, didn’t really have anything to do. She’s barely a character, which is a shame given how powerful Lady Gaga can be.

However, perhaps this is exactly what Phillips wanted: to obliterate the 'Joker' fantasy that some may have embraced. It’s also bold of Warner Bros. (as they occasionally do after a hit) to have likely given Phillips a blank check for this project. Fine performances, but perhaps an official statement from him could have sufficed as well. 2/5 ⭐️

Joker: Folie à Deux is now playing in PH cinemas.
