Netflix Engagement Report (First Half of 2024): 'A Journey', 'Rewind', 'Chico', DonBelle & horror top Filipino titles

As entertainment options continue to diversify, Filipino titles also adjust and find new ways to reach its audience. Netflix has just released its engagement report for the first half of 2024 and there some familiar names and titles that made waves on the platform.

A Journey, Rewind, and Can't Buy Me Love top Netflix charts among PH titles for the first half of 2024

In the movie section, Netflix original A Journey was a solid success for the streamer. The RC Delos Reyes-directed drama starring Paolo Contis, Kaye Abad and Patrick Garcia received 6.9 million views since it premiered last April 12 - meaning it only played for 3 months in the service yet saw substantial amount of viewership. It also helped that this is the comeback movie for the three 'Tabing Ilog' actors (and Desiree del Valle) together.

Rewind was a massive theatrical success, grossing just shy of ₱1 billion worldwide. Now, it's also a solid streaming hit as the movie garnered 5.2 million views on the platform since its March 25th premiere. It really is a testament that one movie can still both be a theatrical and streaming hit - a lesson that Hollywood is also relearning recently.

Horror remains a genre people will see in any platform. Shake, Rattle, and Roll: Extreme led the local horror genre on the platform with 2.9 million views. This was followed by MMFF 2023 hit Mallari (1.9 million) and fellow MMFF entry Kampon (1.4 million). Older horror films also remain viewed by Netflix subscribers such as Eerie (400K views) and Pwera Usog (400K views).

While not every film can be a theatrical hit, streaming can help find other films its audience. This also allowed producers to discover a new economic model to recoup their costs or even make profits. Instant Daddy (2.4 million views), Family of Two (2.3 millon) , & Becky & Badette (1.8 million) all saw solid viewership on the platform which could inspire the streamer to get more local titles on their platform. This is beneficial to indies which can now find a home for their outputs and reach a wider audience. Former Cinemalaya entries Blue Room (100K views) and As If It's True (700K views) were able to do so.

Kathryn Bernardo remains a juggernaut everywhere and Netflix was not excluded. Her 2023 hit A Very Good Girl with Golden Globe nominee Dolly De Leon received 2.1 million views on the platform. Her old classics continue to be rewatched by subscribers such as Hello, Love, Goodbye (700K views) and The Hows of Us (400K views). Speaking of Dolly, she also had another film here - Keys to the Heart, which received 1.2 million views this year despite debuting last year on the service.
