'Toy Story 5,' 'Home Along Da Riles' Set New 2026 Box Office Records Over Father's Day Weekend

Filipinos keep coming back to the big screen this summer. This time, Disney and Riles Productions led the way in bringing them back to multiplexes.

Home Along Da Riles and Toy Story 5

In first place, Disney and Pixar's Toy Story 5 easily dominated the box office with $2.116 million (est. ₱130 million). This is now the highest opening for any film in the country this year, surpassing fellow Disney-distributed film The Devil Wears Prada 2 ($1.683 million). It is also the highest opening for any Toy Story film in the country, surpassing Toy Story 4 ($1.5 million) back in 2019.

  • Toy Story 5 (2026) - $2.116 million
  • Toy Story 4 (2019) - $1.5 million
  • Toy Story 3 (2010) - $1.1 million

With an interesting premise and a seven-year gap since the last film, which left audiences with considerable goodwill, there was little doubt that this fifth installment would do strong business. Adding to activation of its core demographic is the inclusion of music superstar Taylor Swift, who penned the film's closing song. With no competition in the family-film market until Minions & Monsters (June 30), expect Toy Story 5 to remain the top choice among moviegoers.

Fortunately, the box office party was not solely owned by the leading film. Riles Productions' Home Along Da Riles: Da Reunion also made some noise at the box office, opening to a solid ₱35 million. This marks one of the biggest openings for a PG-rated non-MMFF dramedy in the post-pandemic era.

The reunion film featured original cast members from the series, such as Nova Villa, Claudine Barretto, Vandolph, and Smokey Manaloto. Even members of the Sunog Baga Boys and Cita Astals were present in the movie.

Obviously, the property remains popular among its core demographic, based on the strong social media engagement generated by clips from the series online. Nostalgia is also a powerful factor to lean on nowadays. But how did the filmmakers actually convince audiences to return to cinemas?

Organically, for years, the cast had been posting clips of their reunions online through a shared account, which helped drum up excitement for a potential reunion project. By the time they had a project ready, fans were already eager to support it. Beyond nostalgia, the trailers effectively sold audiences on the film's larger stakes, arguably turning it into a must-see theatrical event. Lastly, the film was fortunate enough to secure a release date close to Father's Day weekend (perhaps Midnight Girls could have enjoyed a similar boost from the previous Mother's Day weekend). Marketed in part as a tribute to the legacy of the late Dolphy, the timing of its release made perfect sense.

While Supergirl is set to open the following week, there is still room for Riles Productions and TJAV to rake in a few more millions. The year 2026 remains on track to be one of the strongest years yet for the post-pandemic box office, with more potential hits on the horizon, including Minions & Monsters, Moana, The Odyssey, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Insidious: Out of the Further. On the local front, several upcoming titles are also positioned to do strong business. The box office is arguably so hot right now that, with the right marketing campaign, even independent films could reap some of the rewards.

This article will be updated as more box office figures are released.
