'Mufasa' adds millions while 'Wicked' rises as MMFF 2024 nears end

As the 50th Metro Manila Film Festival nears its end, Mufasa: The Lion King continues to add more millions on its bank despite its limited release on premium screens such as IMAX since Christmas. The prequel added ₱11.5 million ($194,948) from the week of Jan. 1-5, 2025.

In three weeks, Mufasa has now collected ₱124 million ($2,101,861) in the country. While it's a far cry number from its predecessor, The Lion King (2019), which made $10 million back in 2019, it remains a respectable number. The film also returns to the regular screens starting January 8.

CBO gave the film 3/5 stars in a review which described it as an "epic adventure worthy to be seen this holiday on the big screen."

Wicked saw a 314% increase during the week, grossing ₱3 million ($52,229) in the country. This does not include the sing-along screenings which starts January 8 nationwide. In 7 weeks, the adaptation has now made over ₱325 million ($5,519,153) in the country. It is one of the highest grossing 2024 release in the Philippines, only under the likes of Inside Out 2, Hello, Love, Again, and Un/Happy For You.

Speaking of MMFF 2024, they have still not released any official figures, which are said to be pacing lower than the 2023 edition (when Rewind took most of the box office gross). A report could be released once it ends on January 14. Jun Lana's And The Breadwinner Is..., starring Vice Ganda, is expected to top the box office charts, while four films—The Kingdom, Espantaho, Green Bones, and Uninvited—are expected to gross over ₱50 million each.
